The children no programme reaches.

VoiceBridge is a low-cost voice device for children who are out of school — the ones classroom tablets and literacy apps never reach. We are building it in the open, and we are looking for the local organisations who will run it with us.

定位Where we fit

We are not trying to beat what already works.

In Africa, solar tablets, local-language literacy apps and broadcast lessons already exist — with randomised-trial evidence and governments taking them over. Those programmes serve children who are in school. That is not our lane.

In school: already covered

Solar tablets, mother-tongue courseware, TV and radio lessons. Evidence-backed, scaling, and being handed to ministries. We cannot do it better and we are not going to try.

Out of school: nearly unreached

No teacher, no baseline, often no literacy at home, and many are working or caring for siblings. A literacy app quietly assumes school, a teacher, and a starting level of reading. None of the three holds.

Why voice

A child who cannot read can still listen and speak. Push-to-talk removes the literacy prerequisite entirely, and it is the cheapest interface there is: one button, one microphone, one speaker.

Voice is also the riskiest part. Speech recognition on children's speech in low-resource languages performs far worse than on adults — word error rates of 30–80% have been reported in some low-resource settings. We will publish our own measured error rate before any pilot, and if the approach fails we will say so and change the design. One thing we do not leave to chance: recognition is allowed to be approximate, but what the child hears is not — it is pre-vetted and pre-recorded, not generated live.

How it works

In one line: a child presses, the device plays a pre-vetted answer, a coordinator is present.

1

Press and hold

The device captures speech and streams it. Audio is never written to disk.

2

Pre-vetted answer, or offline fallback

Transcribe → match against a pre-vetted answer library → play a recorded human voice. The most common replies are pre-recorded by native speakers and reviewed one by one; only the long tail is synthesised. When confidence is low it does not guess and asks the child to repeat. With no network it falls back to cached lessons.

3

Whitelist and filters

Off-topic or unsafe requests are stopped and handed to the coordinator.

4

A coordinator is the only human backstop

Children take turns with the pass-around near-field microphone. Anything unclear, unanswered or out of bounds goes to the coordinator — whose presence is a precondition for use, and who is the only human backstop.

No human is on the call. No remote volunteers or teachers, no device-to-device calling — cost and safeguarding risk both drop sharply, and the price is that correcting a wrong answer rests entirely on the coordinator in the room. But what the child hears is not generated on the fly: common answers are pre-recorded by native speakers and reviewed one by one, because a promise that the output must be correct is not one a generative model can keep.

设备The device

Don't look at the picture. Try it.

The simulator below actually responds to press-and-hold. It runs on a fixed script, not live AI — but the flow, the blocking logic and the offline fallback are the real design.

This is a demo, not live AI. Replies come from a fixed script, used to show the interaction flow, content blocking and offline fallback. Real accuracy depends on language and environment — we will publish measured word error rates before any pilot and will not claim demo performance as real. One thing the demo does reflect faithfully: in production the reply is not generated on the fly either — it is matched from a pre-vetted library and voiced by a pre-recorded native speaker. The demo follows the shared-hub scenario: the child speaks into a passed-around near-field microphone.

Shared hub · first

Wi-Fi/4GOne hub: loud speaker, large battery or solar, Wi-Fi or 4G
One or two wired near-field microphones, passed to whoever speaks
Fixed at the centre, or carried to where children already gather
Roughly US$25–40 each; a centre needs only one or two
Everyone hears every answer — peer learning comes free

Handheld · later

One per child: ESP32-C3/S3, MEMS mic, small speaker, one button
Near-field capture — the best possible input — plus per-child progress
Roughly US$6–10 each
The cost: 20–50 units to charge every day, and they get lost and broken
Numbered, stored at the centre, counted daily, never taken home

Route: validate with one or two hubs first. Do children use it, is the content right, is the connection stable — none of those needs 50 units. Handhelds follow only once that passes.

Sessions are counted, not recorded. The dashboard holds device ID, time, duration and topic category only.

合作Partner with us

You lead the field. We build the device.

We are an unregistered volunteer team with no funding and no ability to operate in the field. What we have is an open technical design and people willing to work. So there is exactly one way this works: a local organisation leads it.

Local NGO / community organisation

You bring: the site, the language, safeguarding, continuity, and the coordinator.
We bring: the hardware — hubs first, handhelds after validation — technical upkeep, device dashboard, fully open documentation.

Non-formal education programmes

You already get children into the same room regularly — that is the hardest part and the thing we lack most. The device attaches to your existing sessions rather than starting a new programme.

Content and language partners

Mother-tongue content, curriculum alignment, localisation review. If an offline content platform already exists, we would rather use yours than build another.

Fiscal sponsor

We do not accept donations ourselves. All funds are received, spent and reported by a partner or a qualified fiscal sponsor.

What we will not do

No short-term international visitors in direct contact with children
No field deployment that bypasses a local organisation
No donations into personal accounts
No promises of learning outcomes — feasibility comes first
No devices handed to individual children
Volunteer

What we can take now, and what we refuse to recruit yet.

Open now

Backend and device dashboard
Mother-tongue content and translation (language TBD, Hausa first)
Speech-recognition tuning and low-resource language work, incl. child-speech testing
Evaluation, data, and safeguarding policy review

Not open yet

Field and in-country roles. We recruit none until a local partner and a site are confirmed. Better late than promising a placement we cannot deliver — that wastes your time and is worse for the children involved.

路线Roadmap

Built in the open — including what fails.

现在Now

One working prototype and a published accuracy test

Record real speech from 20 target children, run it through candidate engines, publish the word error rate as measured.

接着Next

One or two units, in a real environment

Noise, power, dropouts, whether children actually use it. Plus one more: record the same child near-field and far-field, and quantify the accuracy gap.

然后Then

One centre, one or two hubs, three months

Run jointly with a local partner, with monthly public usage and spending summaries. Handhelds follow only if this passes.

之后After

Publish the results, then decide whether to continue

If thresholds are missed, we stop — and we publish why.

Thresholds are published
答疑Questions

The questions we expect — answered up front.

Which is better — the shared hub or the handheld?
We do not know, which is why we test — and the order matters. One or two hubs answer first: do children use it, is the content right, is the connection stable. Handhelds then answer: is individual usage high enough. One variable has to be controlled: pickup distance. Shared listening is great for children, but far-field pickup makes recognition worse, so the hub comes with a pass-around wired near-field microphone. That way the comparison is shared-versus-personal, not audible-versus-inaudible.
Are you a registered charity?
No. We are a volunteer team with no legal registration and no funding. That is exactly why we do not handle money ourselves: funds are held and reported by a partner or a qualified fiscal sponsor. We understand this stops many conversations, and it should.
Why a device instead of a phone?
Honestly, we do not know yet. A phone with a local SIM and an existing content platform may well be enough, with no customs and no logistics. The only hard argument for a box is durability and that it belongs to the centre. We will get the phone route working first, then decide.
Why not the tablet programmes that already have evidence?
Because they serve children who are in school, and our focus is children who are not. We are not a cheaper version of the same intervention — that is a fight we could not win and should not pick.
Child speech recognition is weak — why bet on voice?
Because for a child who cannot read, voice is the only interface — and because we treat it as a hypothesis to test, not a fact. One consequence of dropping human calls: when recognition fails, nobody is there to correct it. So the design keeps three fallbacks — refuse to answer when confidence is low, ask the child to repeat, and hand over to the coordinator. All of it depends on measuring the real error rate first, and not proceeding if it misses the bar. We split the problem in half on purpose: recognition is allowed to be approximate, but the answer a child hears is not — which is why replies come from a pre-vetted library voiced by pre-recorded native speakers rather than being generated live.
Can the device call a real person?
No. There is no human on the other end — no remote volunteers or teachers, no device-to-device calling. That keeps cost down and simplifies safeguarding. The trade-off: when an answer is wrong, the only person who can catch it is the coordinator in the room. That role is mandatory in our design, not optional.
Do you store children's recordings?
No, and not by policy alone — by architecture. Audio is streamed, transcribed and discarded; the server never writes it to disk. We keep counts, durations and topic categories only. The single exception is a small consented, time-boxed diagnostic sample set that auto-deletes, without which we cannot debug recognition failures.
Which country? Which language?
Not decided — and this decision matters more than any technical one. Current candidates, ordered by available speech resources: Hausa (West Africa; the best-covered of our options in public ASR corpora), Amharic, Kiswahili, French, Chichewa. We will choose it with the partner, weighting speech-recognition feasibility heavily, because the wrong language invalidates the whole approach.
Can I donate?
Not yet, in any way we can responsibly accept. Please contact us and we will say no until a sponsor is in place. What would help more right now is your time or your expertise, not your money.
Is this voluntourism?
It is the right question, and the failure mode is real. So three rules are non-negotiable: a local organisation leads the field, short-term international volunteers never work directly with children, and everything is published. If we ever cannot hold those lines, we should stop.

If you work in education in Africa, we want to hear from you first.

What we need most is to be contradicted. Tell us where this design breaks in your context — that is worth far more to us than a letter of support.
